Stephen Lowe, Ph.D.
Stephen Lowe teaches the U.S. history offerings at Olivet Nazarene University, including the two U.S. history surveys, Civil War and reconstruction, U.S. in the Cold War, American social thought, and sports in American society. He also teaches secondary methods for the social studies and advises the department's secondary education social science majors.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Lowe has maintained an active role in research and writing. His first book, The Kid on the Sandlot: Congress and Professional Sports, was published in 1995. That work was followed by Sir Walter and Mr. Jones: Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, and the Rise of American Golf, which won the 2000 USGA International Book Award. Dr. Lowe is also the author of numerous shorter works: book chapters, book reviews, articles and reference entries appearing in a wide variety of academic and popular periodicals such as GolfWorld, GOLF Magazine, Pebble Beach Magazine, Journal of Sport History, International Journal of the History of Sport, Georgia Historical Quarterly, Dictionary of American Biography and Scribner's Encyclopedia of American Lives.
Dr. Lowe relaxes by spending time with his wife Kimberly and two children, Stephen and Elizabeth. Besides playing golf himself, he loves to caddie for his children while they play and coach them in other sports, including soccer and basketball. He also enjoys spending free time working outdoors and tossing a Frisbee for the family's other significant member, a giant schnauzer named Rocket.
