The Spanish Conquest of the Aztec empire can be characterized as one of the saddest events in New World colonial history. Many of the conquistadores were more bent on plunder and domination than discovery and exploration; this was the percieved perk in the life of a 16th century european soldier. Hernan Cortez and his men crushed the Aztec empire and its people, and placed them into virtual slavery. The wars exacted a substancial toll, but it was the subsequent disease that was the worst. In some areas 80% of the population died from smallpox, of which the indigenous peoples had no natural immunity for. (Diego Rivera, 1951, Palacio Nacional in Ciudad de México).

The mission of the department of History and Political Science at Olivet Nazarene University is (1) to provide students with a conceptual historical framework for a liberal arts education through the general education curriculum; (2) to pursue the integration of Biblically based philosophy of history and the best of current scholarship; and (3) to ground students in these disciplines in the requisite content as well as critical-thinking and research skills.

History

History is the story of the human family: the options open to generations past, the choices made and the consequences of those decisions. History is the story of God at work in the world. Christianity is embedded in and revealed through the story of the human race, and that story is not only the foundation of culture, but also faith. You will explore the relationship of faith and culture and develop a thoughtful Christian worldview to challenge hollow secular philosophies.

Political Science

Political Science is a liberal arts major that deals with three broad aspects of the theory and practice of government:

  1. American national government, including the Constitution, civil liberties, rights and more.
  2. International relations, including the history of international policies and U.S. foreign policy.
  3. Political philosophy, including the study of ancient, medieval, modern and postmodern philosophies and thinkers.
