Department of History and Political Science at Olivet Nazarene University

Dear Future Olivetian:

I am thrilled to know that you are interested in pursuing work in the Department of History and Political Science at Olivet Nazarene University!

These combined departments offer courses that will prepare you for graduate studies in either field and give you excellent undergraduate preparation for government service, law school or teaching profession at the secondary or college level. Your history/political science study also might lead to various kinds of administrative roles in business, government or private organizations.

We have just completed a thorough review of our program and are introducing a group of new courses that will help you better understand the world you are inheriting. These new courses include World Civilization, Origins of Human Society, History of Technology and Sports in American Culture. If there are topics you would like to study that we do not offer, you can design your own course under the title, "Readings in History." Such independent study is great preparation for graduate school.

Learning also takes place outside the classroom at Olivet. We offer a number of opportunities to study places such as Washington, D.C., Russia, Egypt, Costa Rica, Japan, Indonesia, China and England. These semesters abroad are a great way to learn to speak a second language and to experience firsthand the history and culture of other peoples. We also offer a variety of shorter study trips overseas.

Let me know how I can be of assistance. I certainly would like to meet you and talk with you when you visit the campus.

Sincerely,

William Dean, Ph.D.
Chairman, Department of History and Political Science
