Demoncritus (ca. 460 BC - ca. 370 BC)

Greek philosopher and mathematician best known for his atomic theory in conjunction with his mentor Leucippus. In mathematics Democritus' major contribution was in geometry where he determined that a cone or pyramid has a volume of one third of a cylinder or prism of the same base and height. His mathematical works include: On Numbers, On Geometries, On Tangencies, On Mapping, and On Irrationals.
