Demoncritus (ca. 460 BC – ca. 370 BC)

Greek philosopher and mathematician best known for his atomic theory in conjunction with his mentor Leucippus. Notice that both the bill and the coin below show an atomic symbol in recognition of his contribution. In mathematics Democritus' major contribution was in geometry where he determined that a cone or pyramid has a volume of one third of a cylinder or prism of the same base and height. His mathematical works include: On Numbers, On Geometries, On Tangencies, On Mapping, and On Irrationals.
