Newton, Issac (1642-1727)

English mathematician and scientist credited with discovering gravity. Along with Gottfried Leibniz, Newton is credited with the independent discovery of calculus. He evidently worked out the basic ideas of calculus years before Leibniz, but did not publish anything fearing ridicule, mentioning his work only after Leibniz published his work. Newton also developed a technique for finding the zeros of an equation, now known as Newton’s method, is credited with the generalized binomial theorem, and made contributions to power series, Diophantine equations, and finite differences.
