Thomas Jefferson (1743 -1826)

Jefferson, the third president of the United States of America was not a mathematician but did have strong connections to mathematics.He was strongly influenced by Professor of Mathematics William Small at William and Mary College.He contibuted in raising the educational importance of mathematics at the University of Virginia. As a politician he proposed a method of apportionament that was actually used in the early years of the United States.
