Hamilton, William Rowan (1805-1865)

Sir William Rowan Hamilton was an Irish mathematician and physicist. He is probably best known as the inventor of quaternions, He tried to extend a geometic representation of complex numbers to higher spatial dimensions. While he failed to find a useful extention to three dimensions, quaternions were created when he extended the idea to four dimensions. He also created and marketed a puzzle on an icosahedron which can be solved by finding what is now known as a Hamiltonian path.
