Gerbert of Aurillac is also known as Pope Sylvester II, a French born scholar who served as Pope. As a mathematician Gerbert is well known not as a creator of new mathematics but instead as one who popularised the use of Indo-Arabic numbers at a time when the notation and numbers used limited the development of mathematics.
