Abel, Niels Henrik (1802 - 1829)

A Norwegian mathematician who lived a short but productive life, contributing to several mathematical fields. At the age of 16 he came up with an original proof of the binomial theorem showing it valid for all numbers. He later showed that there is no general algebraic solution for polynomials of degree five or higher. Numerous results bear his name including the Abel-Ruffini theorem and Abelian groups and varieties. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 26.
