Mercator, Gerardus (1512 – 1594)

Gerardus Mercator was a cartographer and mathematician. He is best known for his map projection which he used in 1569 to produce a world map. His projection used parallel lines of longitude to make it easier to mark courses as straight lines. He also taught mathematics at the college of Duisburg.
