Aleksandr Lyapunov (1857 -1918)

Russian mathematician best known for his work on stability theory in dynamical systems. A student of Andrey Markov and Chebyshev, his thesis “On the stability of ellipsoidal forms of equilibrium of rotating fluids”, was suggested to him by Chebyshev. Lyapunov’s main area of interest were the stability of equilibria and the motion of mechanical systems. He generalized the works of Chebyshev and Markov, and proved a more general version of the Central limit theorem.
