Leibniz, Gottfried (1646-1716)

German mathematician and philosopher credited, with Newton, as the discoverer of calculus. He published his results on infinitesimal calculus first and much of his calculus notation is still in use today. His notation included the integral sign and a leading d representing a differential. Leibniz also contributed to Boolean algebra with the conjunction, disjunction and other logic operators. He also explicitly used the idea of a function, used and solved coefficients of linear equations in a matrix, and contributed to topology including the idea of self-similarity which was used centuries later in fractal geometry.
