Lagrange, Joseph-Louis (1736 - 1813)

Lagrange was an Italian mathematician and astronomer who worked in the areas of analysis and number theory. He was one of the key individuals in the development of the calculus of variations, derving the Euler-Lagrange equations. He developed the method of Lagrange multipliers as well as the method of variation of parameters for solving differential equations.
