Krylov was a Russian naval engineer and applied mathematician. In 1904 he built a machine that could integrate ordinary differential equations. In 1931 he published a paper on what is now known as the Krylov subspace, using eigenvalues and the characteristic polynomial. He worked in the area of numerically efficient computations.
