Juana Ines de la Cruz (1909 - 1992)
A Mexican self taught mathematician and poet. She argued for the
relationship between math and music, Pythagorean principles, spiral
harmonics, and the Platonic aesthetic idea of beauty. metaphors drawn
from physics, mathematics, and music. A birthday poem states: “Let
your age, my lord, so greatly exceed/ The capacity embraced by zero/
That the ars combinatoria of Kircher/ Are unable to multiply
its quantity.” Influenced by Descartes’ Discours de la méthode.
