Francisco Jose de Caldas was a Colombian lawyer and naturalist. He was self taugth in mathematics and astronomy. At an early age he showed a passion for mathematics. He accompanied Jose Mutis on an expedition. His greatest discovery may have been the method for measuring altitude by the boiling point of water.
