Buffon, Georges de (1707 - 1788)

Buffon was a French mathematician, and naturalist. His Sur le jeu de franc-carreau introduced calculus to probabilty theory. In mathematics he is best known for the needle experiment bearing his name, which can be used to estimate pi.
