Banneker, Benjamin (1731-1806)

Benjamin Banneker was a free African American mathematician, scientist and surveyor. He had little formal education and was largely self-taught. He is best known for his involvement in surveying the borders of the 10 square mile area that was to become the District of Columbia. He worked on several almanacs and used his knowledge of mathematics to make astronomical calculations that led to the prediction of several solar and lunar ecipses.
