Babbage, Charles (1791 - 1871)

An English mathematician, inventor, and astronomer who created the idea of a programmable computer. He designed and started on, but never completed, a mechanical device known as a difference engine that would compute values of polynomial functions. It was later shown that a completed model would have accomplished his computational goals.
