Avicenna (980 - 1037)

Avicenna, also known as Ibn Sina, was a Persian scientist. He is reported to have written approximately 450 works, of which approximately 240 have survivied. While best known for his work in the field of medicine, including his work, Kitab al-Shifa (The Book of Healing), he did contribute to mathematics. Specifically his Book of Healing, which is broken into four parts, has one part that is primarily mathematics. He divided mathematics into four branches: arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music.
