Introduction
Have you ever thought about what your dream house would be like?
Just imagine living in a
home that is tailored just to fit you. You can make it as large
or as small as you please. There are no limitation. What is
your preference? Do you like columns or arches. Would you prefer
casement windows or bay? How about and indoor pool or a closed in
basketball court? The possibilities are endless. Join us as
we take an adventure discovering the many historical homes styles that
have influenced the modern homes of today. You may find your ideal
dream home or if not have fun designing and creating your own.
The Task
You will research historical
homes and learn the different aspects of style associated with each period.
You will also take a tour of
your neighborhood and identify the homes in the area. After studying
the many different architectural features of home on the internet,
in books and etc. you will design your own home demonstrating your knowledge
of architectural history by implementing many of these features in your
designs.
The Process
Objective: Students will complete a computer search to find different
housing style from the following sites listed below.
Objective: Students will describe the houses found on the sites
given .
Objective: Students will list and describe the housing styles
in their neighborhood.
objective: Students will identify the architectural features
on each house listed in objectives 1,2,and3
Objective: Students will design their dream home using three
of the architectural features studied in class.
Day 1
"TREASURE HUNT'
Find an example of each house listed below. Describe the house in
about 2 sentences. make a copy of your favorite style.
1. Gothic Revival
2.Georgian Colonial
3.Itallian Renaissance
4.Germanic Cottage
5.British Georgian.
6.Classical Style
7.Queen Ann Victorian
8.English Tudor
9.Ranch Style
10.Garrison
11.Spanish adobe
12.Cape Cod
Day 2
Continue research on housing styles.You may also use magazines, books
or pictures to aid you in your search.
Day 3
"DISCOVERY'
Travel through the neighborhood and make a list of the housing styles
in your area. You may take photos or make sketches.
Include these photos in your assignment.
Day 4
"FEATURE THIS"
GROUP ACTIVITY:
Students will use magazines ,the pictures printed from the web search
and the photos or sketches collected during the neighborhood search to
identify the architectural features . Compare these features with
the charts and pictures displayed in class.
Day 5
'CREATING A MASTERPIECE'
Design your own home using at least 3 of the architectural features
you've learned. List the name of each feature and the style of
house from which it was borrowed.

Evaluation
observation, student presentation, class discussion, housing design,
pictures collected, recognition of architectural features
from chart displays, videos, and books of homes in class.
Conclusion
Completion of this lesson will provide you with hands-on-experience
and first-hand knowledge of diverse home styles.
you will recognize various historical homes and their architectural
features. You will gain knowledge in designing your own home and
developing a floor plan.
