Through technology and medical breakthroughs, what were major illnesses in 1929,  are now curable with a pill or preventable with a shot. In 1929 people suffered illnesses that we think of today as minor or everyday occurrences. Such diseases as the common cold or the flu was deadly. Vaccines were not developed and penicillin was just  being invented. Dentistry was primitive to the point that a simple tooth extraction was a  major operation. Mentally ill patients were warehoused in institutions. Sexually transmitted diseases were virtually incurable, as alcoholism was ignored. There was no health plan through the federal government. It was only through county facilities where any medical assistants could be found. You can find more information by checking out, www.askjeeves.com via diseases of 1929 or www.ilovehistory.com
