Farm Security Administration: School in Alabama. (Circa 1935)
Life during the Great Depression was very difficult. Students were faced with a life that most of us cannot even imagine. Children that were able to go to school had trouble concentrating. How could they think about reading and writing when they did not know if they would get dinner that night. There were many school that were reduced to shacks. There children actually had to attend classes in old broken down buildings or shacks. Some children were not even able to attend school. There were many families who needed their children to work (if they had the opportunity) so they didn't attend school.
