Lots of people don’t have a lot of confidence in their writing and speaking abilities. But this chapter offers lots of guidelines. Check the following statements that are true. If you are on the fence about a statement, check it off. In addition, if you’d like more practice or information about the topic in the statement, mark off the statement.

1. I don’t know what an instructor is looking for in a term paper.

2. I go about working on a term paper in a haphazard way.

I never seem to pick out "doable" topics for my papers. Either my topics are too broad or too narrow.

4. I find libraries intimidating.

5. There is so much to doing research. I don’t know where to begin.

6. After I have done the research, I’m stymied by the writing stage.

7. I often get "writer’s block."

8. I’m not worried about being skilled at writing because I won’t use it after I graduate.

9. I don’t have to be careful when using the Internet for research.

10. I don’t know how to prepare and deliver a speech.
