For a short time (1 or 2 minutes) overview the entire chapter. Look at the way the chapter is laid out. Note headings and subheads. List the main points that you surveyed:
Take a look at the heading of the first section and turn it into a question. For example, if the text were about computer software, and the heading is "Basic Software Tools for Work and Study" you can ask the question, "What does basic software tools mean?" or the question: "Will these software tools help me?" This will allow you to become personally involved in the material you are reading. Do this for several headings in the chapter. (For this exercise the questions will be about College Success.)
What are your questions?
Now you can actually do the reading. Read at least five paragraphs of the first section. Read with a purpose–actively searching to answer the questions you posed. Does the section answer your questions?
Put the text down. Recite the answers you have discovered.
Come back to the chapter later. Go back over the book’s headings and ask the questions again. Use memory aids to help you recall the information.
How well did you think the SQ3R method worked?
