tips for buying a used computer

You might want to print these tips and keep them with you for future reference.

Buying from an individual means that you have little recourse if something goes wrong. The following tips should help you buy carefully:

  • Take someone who knows computers with you.
  • Turn the computer on and off a few times to make sure there are no problems with start up.
  • Turn the computer off and look for screen burn-in, a ghost image on the screen after the computer has been turned off. It can indicate misuse.
  • Use the computer. Use the software you plan on using. Listen for strange sounds when you insert the disc.
  • Ask about the warranty. Some companies (Apple, IBM) permit warranties to be transferred from one owner to another. A new owner can usually have the warranty extended for a fee.
