Theres Something About Mary - 49  why
Story: 8 -  There was a plot? The only positive is that it somehow worked Bret Farvre into the movie and it seemed to fit.

Acting: 26 -  Ben Stiller is good at making fun of himself, but it gets tiresome after a while. Cameron Diaz pulled off a farily convincing oblivious sweetheart.

Creators: 15 -  Well made, funny at parts, but you have to wonder why someone would want to make such a blatant gross-out-for-gross-out's-sake movie.

Impact: 10 -  I laughed. They wanted to gross people out, they succeeded . I guess that means it gets full credit here.

Modifiers: - 10 -  This movie was designed for one purpose, to cross the line. Something About Mary bounded over the line.

Thin Red Line, The - 77  long
Story: 28 -  At first I thought this story was going nowhere, and in a sense it wasn't. But the chaos of war doesn't ever really make sense and this movie tried to capture that feeling. The fine line between logical sanity and hell is crossed several times. Saving Private Ryan, this movie is not...if the length puts you to sleep, you will miss its point. Strongly anti-war but artisticly portrayed.

Acting: 28 -  Excellent acting from most of the cast. Nick Nolte expresses rage and intensity like not many actors can. Great bit parts for George Clooney and Travolta.

Creators: 20 -  Tremendous filming, excellent music and the cinematography is simply amazing

Impact: 4 -  Though I was impressed with the movie's artistic value, and interesting perspective on war, I was utterly shocked at how long the movie was. The story dragged in parts and made it unclear what its real point was.

Modifiers: - 3 -  I very rarely check my watch in a movie because I get involved in the story. During The Thin Red Line, I checked my watch expecting to have been there more than 2 hours, and only 1 hour and 10 minutes had gone by. Something is wrong with that, and it points to an inconsistent message.

True Crime - 64 snooze
Story: 24 - Not much exciting here, no real surprises. An intriguing story about a reporter trying to free a man from execution. A ghastly ending destroys hopes for a 30 in this category.

Acting: 24 - Clint is always good, however, this was one of his more stale outings. James Woods is superb and even Dennis Leary is believable as an editor.

Creators: 16 - Several nitpicky gaffes, but my main complaint is the ending....what were they thinking?!

Impact: 5 - Once again, the ending steals the show, what could have made you leave the movie thinking, makes you leave the movie wondering what they were thinking!

Modifiers: - 5 - Bah! The ending!
