Serendipity - 68
Story: 20 -
The story is totally unrealistic, and yawningly predictable, but I suppose that is expected in most love tales. The thing that bothered me about this movie was how easily both main characters were willing to totally ditch their current, seemingly well-matched partners, and have it be all fine and dandy. To their credit though, the writers steered clear of a few cliches.
Acting: 18 -
Its not very often where the supporting cast out-acts the main star, but it comes close to happening here. Not that John Cusack acted poorly, it just seemed to be his same old routine. The cast blended well.
Creators: 19 -
Nicely directed and produced with a few interesting perspectives thrown in.
Impact: 7 -
I still can't help but not like this movie for its casual treatment of serious long-term commitments without consequences. Not very realistic at all.
Modifiers: + 4 -
Despite misgivings about the movie, I remained interested. Perfect amounts of humor to keep you from marveling at the parade of unrealistic events.

Showtime - 77
Story: 22 -
It is always fun to see a formula movie that intentionally pokes fun at the formula that is used to make itself. Simple idea, a tough cop gets stuck with an unwanted bumbling partner, but somehow this seems fresh, and used effectively in Showtime. The vehicle used to move the story along (bad guy with new big guns)seemed a little tired though.
Acting: 28 -
Robert DeNiro and Eddie Murphy...someone should get an award just for making a movie with those two headliners. All the main characters in this movie were great, especially entertaining was William Shatner.
Creators: 17 -
A funny action movie isn't exactly easy. The flow is easy to interrupt. For the most part Showtime keeps the action distinct and dramatic. But there are times when you forget that these cops are actually on a case.
Impact: 8 -
Fun, good entertainment, and partially original. If more movies followed this pattern I would watch them much more often!
Modifiers: + 2 -
Great fun to cast these actors together. DeNiro is definitely under-rated as a comedian. Now, if he could just clean his mouth out a bit!

Shrek - 89
Story: 28 -
Imagine every cliche of animated movies and then twist it around to show how silly the cliche is. You have Shrek. An awesome tale that pokes fun at Disney more than a few times! A few things may have been a little modern to stick in a fairy tale, but they were fun anyway. The best part is the Muffin Man song.
Acting: 28 -
There aren't really actors, but the characters are well casted and the voice acting is perfect to tell this kind of story. As usual Mike Myers is the biggest ham.
Creators: 19 -
Fabulous computer rendering! Some of the features and mannerisms of the characters were incredibly lifelike.
Impact: 9 -
Knee-slapping funny, and a welcome fresh perspective. The only reason this does not get a 10 is this: Shrek pokes so much fun at fairy tales that it might go overboard for younger audiences, which in turn would make older audiences not like it since it isn't what they remember fairy tales as. Whatever.
Modifiers: + 5 -
Strikingly original after an endless barrage of fromulaic Disney movies. Great computer rendering. Just look at the princess' hair!

Spy Game - 84
Story: 28 -
Combining bits of mystery, thriller, and drama, this spy story turns out not to be a spy story at all. Instead its more of a story of loyalty and trust between two people who just happen to be spys. Jumping back and forth between time, it can be a little tough to follow at points if you get distracted, but it is worth the effort. No surprises, but very solid.
Acting: 29 -
Robert Redford, always steady, shows his experience and confidence, while Brad Pitt (who looks remarkably like a young Redford) strides right along with him. Excellent bit parts and overall very solid acting.
Creators: 18 -
My only complaint is the seeming choppiness of the pace, not a major problem, just something that is unavoidable in this type of anti-chronological movie.
Impact: 8 -
Well crafted, great cast, good story. All around a very entertaining movie. Well worth your time to check out.
Modifiers: + 1 -
Kudos to the casting crew. What a great set of actors.

Swordfish - 68
Story: 15 -
Preposterosity (I just made that up) is what dooms, and saves this script. If you pay attention, one of the characters pretty much tells you what is going to happen in the movie. The sheer outrageousness keeps you interested, but it ends up being a little too outrageous to take without a few teaspoons of salt.
Acting: 27 -
Hugh Jackman has a very strong presence and is somehow innately believable. Travolta is not likewise blessed, but plays a stupendous insane megalomaniac.
Creators: 17 -
Great movie making. Some incredible camera work and great action sequences. My only beef...PLEASE do a little research before you talk computer lingo and hacking. The "hacking" was mostly multiple references to techy-type things strung together in a sentence.
Impact: 6 -
Dog Day Afternoon is referenced many times in the film. From the opening sequence about Hollywood making a bunch of crap, to several of the story's visual devices. The problem is that Swordfish never delivers on its promise to make a better film than Dog Day Afternoon.
Modifiers: + 3 -
The 360 degree pan around a huge explosion is nothing short of jaw-dropping. Too bad the rest of the movie couldn't keep up.
