Pearl Harbor - 75  none
Story: 19 -  The biggest problem with this movie is its lack of connection to the characters. Although you feel for each one of them, somewere along the line the continuity is lost. Excellent acting couldn't save an overly sentimental script.

Acting: 30 -  Jon Voight is an incredible FDR. Affleck remains a strong character in any role he takes on. Fabulous supporting cast. Alec Baldwin has one of the best of smaller parts.

Creators: 13 -  This is a very difficult category for this movie. The production and direction of the dogfights and battle scenes is nothing short of stunning. However the incessant tendancy of a Bruckheimer/Bay movie to linger over an emotional scene past critical impact really detracts from the overall package.

Impact: 5 -  Be sure not to drink anything for at least 2 hours before seeing this movie! Brevity is not its strong suit. The horror of war that our generation does not understand was not delivered to the audience. I couldn't believe that people actually cheered once or twice duiring the fighting.

Modifiers: + 7 -  Conflicting modifiers add and detract to this movie. Too much fluff, length and a few plot canyons were detractors. But the film treatments and special effects were outstanding. Incredibly realistic battle in the middle of the movie. Excellent sets, I can't remember anything at all looking fake.

Planet of the Apes - 73  none
Story: 20 -  Years after the original, the intent of the story is fascinating. However, in the new version there are some plot holes that are never filled, things that are never explained, and events that are only included for visual impact. While the intent is great, the story gets hurt.

Acting: 21 -  Tim Roth is the highlight of this film. His role as villian is surprisingly convincing. Michael Clark Duncan plays a good rough and tough colonel, but Mark Whalberg is a little flat. Some of it might have had to do with the dialogue, but many of the supporting cast were weak, save a great cameo by Charlton Heston.

Creators: 20 -  No knocks on these guys. Incredible visuals, great mood and simply unbeliveable makeup. Tim Burton shows his best stuff once again.

Impact: 7 -  Overall, a very interesting take on the original. However, the interesting ending is a little contrived and the rest of the movie doesn't live completely up to its potential.

Modifiers: + 6 -  Absolutely groundbreaking makeup. A great version of a classic, and Charlton Heston puts one point here just because he is in it.
